When is it a good idea to write 'for deposit only' on your check?

Answered By Chuck Ivens, Editor

If you write a 'for deposit only' on the back of your check, it's some sort of loss-prevention measure. In case your check is stolen, lost, or misappropriated, your money is safe and will not be released to another person. It is often used for bill payments. It prevents anyone from cashing the money; therefore, the check is deposited only into the account of the recipient.
